So I've survived the hellish winter storm of January 2009. I lost power Tuesday afternoon. Called in Tuesday night because I wasn't about to try driving to Harrodsburg with the roads as icy as they were; also, tree branches began falling Tuesday evening and some were already somewhat blocking my driveway. Wednesday, I still didn't have power and more branches were falling, one good sized one completely blocking my driveway. Two of the young gentlemen that lived across the street came over to help move it out of the way. That's when I decided to go to my grandmother's house to stay a few days as she still had power and heat. For note, I still had heating and cooking and hot water capabilites as those are controlled by gas for my house.* Called in to work again Wednesday night because apparently Harrodsburg Wal-Mart had lost power sometime Tuesday evening. I was off work Thursday night so I went over to an aunt's house to get online for a bit and to run to Wal-Mart for a few things for my great-aunt. Wal-Mart had been running on generators Thursday after having to bring in refrigeration trucks for all the cold groceries. They were able to put stuff back out after getting the generators delivered. Friday morning, I made it back to my place to check on things. I hade power, so I got some laundry done, but the cable line for my internet had broken so I called that in to Time Warner, my cable internet company. I went back to Harrodsburg because weather reports were calling for another snow system coming through Friday and I didn't want to be stuck in Danville and trying to make it to work Friday night. Went in to work with no problems. When I got there, they didn't have running water and were still running on generators. They transfered back to electric about 3:30 yesterday morning with water coming back online about 5:30. I'm glad I wasn't working in maintenance because people had used the bathrooms without the toilets having the ablility to flush. I had to go to my grandmother's house on my lunch break just to be able to use a toilet. After getting off work yesterday, I came back to Danville an have been comfortable ever since except without having internet until the guy came to fix the drop line today. He was done by 1:00 and I had access shortly thereafter. Been catching up with the news since then. Now I'm off for a nap before going into work tonight. I will neither include it in last year's list nor this year's, since I've read parts in each. In case you're wondering, I'm working on Pamela Dean's Tam Lin</>. I've placed stars by those that were re-reads for me, so not counting Tam Lin, by my count, I re-read 17 books and 32 books were new reads. This year, I plan to read 50 books of novel length. I would like 40 of those to be new reads. In case you're wondering, the title of the book is italicized and the author is not. I pasted and copied my list from several posts, and apparently, I started out placing one first and the other second and then switched about half way through the year.Tags: book list, complete 2008 book list Current Location: home What I'm feeling: creative What's in my head: song from Master & Commander: Far Side of the World

Before I forget what I've recently read, here's my updated book list: 44. Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert 45. River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze by Peter Hessler 46. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer 47. Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer 48. New Moon by Stephenie Meyer Two more books until I reach 50 by the end of the year and just about as many weeks. I've got two started, but I'm in the first chapter of both; one is a new one and the other is a reread, although it's been a year or two since I've read it. I want to thank jenniferlupin, littlegreenleaf, annathepiper, cynical_terror, and everyone else who have kept my family in their thoughts and prayers this past week as we have had to deal with the death and burial of my father. He died two weeks shy of his 62nd birthday. I'm glad that he lived long enough to see Sarah's 30th birthday, which was on the 10th. He had been in the hospital the week prior to his death, only having been released Saturday afternoon. It was the Home health nurse who found him when she came to check on him Sunday morning. Uncle John and Aunt Shirley had visited him Saturday afternoon and they noticed something was off, but couldn't pinpoint anything. My father hadn't gotten much sleep while in the hospital because he had trouble breathing while laying down. I had gotten home about 8:30 Saturday night after going to Sarah's birthday party in Gravel Switch. I had taken some food up to my father. He wasn't in his living room, so I assumed he had gone to his bedroom to at least try to lay down after taking his medicine earlier in the day. I had left his food in a handy location and filled the water pitcher on top of his kerosene heater in his living room. I had thought about checking on him but assumed he was asleep since he wasn't in his living room. My father was notorious for being a very deep sleeper, an earthquake probably wouldn't have woken him up. From what others have said, he had called the police to report that there was a child wandering around his apartment at about 10:00 Saturday night. The police had come over to investigate but found nothing. When the home health nurse showed up the next morning, she found him on the floor by his rocking chair in his living room, he didn't have his nasal canula for his oxygen tank on. The family thinks the child visitation was an angel to take him to heaven. Everyone was rather emotional at the funeral Wednesday. Grandma Hays said it helped for me to stay with her for several days, but I finally went home Wednesday night. I felt as if I wouldn't be able to begin to come to terms with his death until I had gotten home. I walked up front Wednesday night and Thursday night to get my mail, and had to pass his living room window to do so. That was very difficult to do because I would look over into the window and I expected to see him there. Depending on the weather, we may begin sorting through his things tomorrow. That will be a long, emotional process that will take many days and many people to sort through everything.
